In order to find the best electric shavers, we took a closer look at and compared countless shavers, worked out their strengths and weaknesses and also tried out many models ourselves. I would like to present our findings and results from our extensive razor test with what I consider to be the five best razors.

1. Braun Series 9 9296cc

The Braun Series 9 9296cc is a real top razor from the world famous brand manufacturer and fully deserves our test winner. The device provides an extremely efficient and thorough shave at the highest level. No other current electric razor has done so well in comparison, neither from Braun nor from any other manufacturer. It is very gentle in dealing with sensitive facial skin. It is equipped with five specialized cutting elements for different hair lengths as well as a fold-out precision trimmer for trimming a beard. Since the shaver is 100 percent waterproof, you can also use it as a wet razor in the shower or with shaving foam or shaving gel thanks to the Wet & Dry function.

The delivery includes a 5-stage Clean & Charge cleaning and charging station based on alcohol, which according to the manufacturer is unique worldwide. The battery life of 50 minutes is perfectly ok. In addition, the Braun Series 9 9296cc, like its sister devices from the Series 9, scores with an LED display that shows the remaining battery life. I am very excited about this Braun shaver and have been using it since my test as my private shaver in the bathroom at home. So it’s clear: The Braun Series 9 9296cc razor is our new 2018 test winner and the best razor in our big electric razor test. There is a very clear recommendation to buy from us. Unfortunately, it is not quite cheap, which is however absolutely understandable due to the performance shown.

2. Philips S9711/31 Series 9000

The Philips S9711/31 Series 9000 is a wet and dry shaver in one. In the Philips razor test it was able to inspire thanks to innovative technology and is winner in the department “New Technology”. It wasn’t quite enough to win my electric razor test, as the device is about 300 € at Amazon, a lot more expensive than the Braun Series 9 9090cc shaver.

Especially the shaver head of the Philips S9711/31 Series 9000 wet & dry shaver is packed with the latest and specially developed technology. The blades are precision blades in a special V-track shape which, according to the manufacturer Philips, bring the hair into the optimal cutting position and thus ensure an excellent shaving result. Thanks to 8-Direction DynamicFlexHeads, the shaving heads adapt perfectly in 8 directions to the contours of even angular male faces and ensure a great result and up to 20% more beard hair – according to Philips. And they’re right, as my experience with the Philips S9711/31 Series 9000 has shown in the Philips shaver test.

Also the battery of the Philips S9711/31 Series 9000 could inspire me in the shaver test. It offers up to 50 minutes of wireless shaving. If the integrated battery is empty, it only needs to be recharged for 60 minutes. And if you need to shave quickly, a quick charge for a shave can be done in just three minutes.

Especially on the Philips S9711/31 Series 9000, besides being used as a wet razor and as a dry razor, the fact is that it can also be used in the shower and with foam. After use, it is quickly and conveniently cleaned again by the SmartClean PRO cleaning system included in the scope of delivery with the enclosed cleaning cartridge and is thus as good as new and optimally equipped for use the next morning.

3. Philips S7520/50 Series 7000

Price/performance winner in our electric shaver test is the Philips S7520/50 Series 7000 wet and dry shaver. For an Amazon price of just about 150 €, you get a great razor at a great price. The device could also inspire me in my shaver test, not only because of the cheap price. The scope of delivery and the equipment are not quite as good as the test winner but do not need to hide – especially not for the called price.

With the 5-Direction DynamicFlex Heads, the shaving head adapts to the shape of the face in up to 5 directions, which was sufficient in my practical test and provided good results when shaving. Not least also because of the GentlePrecision shaving heads, which together with the microsphere coating also protect the skin and thus ensure fewer red and burning spots, especially in men with somewhat more impure skin – like me. “Who wants to be beautiful has to suffer” is not the case with the Philips S7520/50 Series 7000 wet and dry razor, because the price/performance winner provides a great shaving experience at a low price. You only have to do without a cleaning station here, so simply rinse the razor under water after shaving. A clip-on beard styler and a facial cleansing brush are included and the Philips S7520/50 Series 7000 electric shaver can also be used in the shower.

4. Braun Series 7 799cc-7

The Braun Series 7 799cc-7 Electric Shaver Wet & Dry also has a place in the top 5 in the ranking “The best shavers”. Because this shaver also convinced me in the shaver test. To the test victory and the title “Best razor” it was not enough for the appliance of traditional manufacturer Braun, but a placement among the best five razors is the Amazon shaver almost 200 € expensive.

The Braun Series 7 799cc-7 electric razor Wet & Dry does not have a triangular razor head, like many newfangled appliances, but the classic shape. Thanks to ActiveLift and OptiFoil – a technique that, according to the manufacturer, lifts flat lying hair in problem areas such as the neck and thus even covers hair with a length of 0.05 mm – the Braun razor achieves good shaving performance, making it an all-round good razor.

The scope of delivery is also very good for the lower price compared to the test winner. In addition to the razor with retractable beard trimmer, the set also includes a Clean&Renew cleaning station and a cleaning cartridge. By the way, if you don’t think much of the cleaning stations – which I couldn’t understand because of the good results in my shaver test – you can easily clean the Braun Series 7 799cc-7 under running water thanks to its 100 percent waterproof construction – and thus save on the purchase of cleaning cartridges, for example.

5. Philips SP9860/16

The Philips SP9860/16 electric shaver is a real innovation. Why? Not necessarily because of the built-in shaving technology. But because of the charger. Because this Philips razor comes with a Qi charging pad. The shaver is simply placed on this pad, similar to a smartphone. The integrated battery charges within a short time. After that, it lasts for 60 minutes, which is a good value.

The SP9860/16 from Philips also scores well in other respects. With its five specialized cutting elements, the NanoTech precision blades, the BeardAdaptSensor and the skin comfort coating, it provides a very good and skin-friendly shave almost on the level of our test winner. In addition, it is 100 percent waterproof, has an LED display and looks damn classy. However, the Philips SP9860/16 had to put up with a few small criticisms in the test. Among other things, there is no cleaning station – and that despite the high price.

6. Braun Series 9 9240s

Another razor from Braun’s Series 9 is the 9240s. Also this electric razor convinces with an excellent equipment regarding the shaving head. Its five special cutting elements ensure a top shaving result, which is also as gentle to the skin as possible. This Braun electric razor can also be used both wet and dry, so you can also shave wet. Because the device is 100 percent waterproof.

This also benefits you when cleaning, as you can rinse the Braun Series 9 9240s under running water. Unfortunately, there is no cleaning station included in the delivery. But this Series 9 shaver is also a bit cheaper than models with a cleaning station. However, you won’t have to do without a battery that lasts 50 minutes and the LED display under control.

7. Panasonic ES-LV95-S803

This electric razor also convinces with a good shave, but it can’t quite keep up with Braun’s top models. This also applies to the skin protection, which is on a good level, but also not outstandingly good.

On the positive side, a cleaning station is included despite the reasonable price. In addition, the Panasonic ES-LV95-S803 scores with a beard density sensor that adjusts the power of the 5-way shaving head to the respective situation. It should also be noted that this Panasonic can also be used as a dry or wet razor. So you can use it with shaving foam as well as in the shower. This gives you more flexibility. All in all a good razor at a very reasonable price, whose flagship is above all the cleaning station.

8. Braun Series 5 5090cc

The Braun Series 5 5090cc is the mid-range electric shaver from Braun. But this model did very well in our electric shaver test. Although it is equipped with less technology than the Series 7 and 9 models, it convinces with a good and thorough shave that is also suitable for sensitive skin. This is partly due to the UltraActiveLift and CrossHair blades and the 40 degree swivel FlexMotionTec shaving head with MacroMotion. You can read more about what all this technical jargon from Braun’s marketing department means in our test report.

What is also extremely positive is the fact that, the Braun Series 5 5090cc is in the middle class, it comes with an alcohol-based Clean & Charge cleaning station with four levels, which both loads and cleans the razor. In addition, the razor is 100 percent waterproof and can be cleaned under running water. However, it is only a dry shaver, so it cannot be used with shaving foam or shaving gel.

9. Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3040s

Braun’s Series 3 is virtually the entry-level electric shaver. This includes the Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3040s, which costs just 50 euros. The device offers three pressure-sensitive shearing elements and the special MicroComb technology to ensure a solid to good shaving result. This is absolutely satisfactory, but in terms of thoroughness and skin protection it clearly cannot compete with the top models from Braun and other manufacturers. But the device is also very inexpensive.

Nevertheless, the equipment includes a precision trimmer on the back of the razor. It can be used to get sideburns or beards into shape, among other things. Thanks to its waterproof design, you can also clean the Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3040s under running water and it can also be shaved as a wet & dry model in the shower as well as with shaving foam or shaving gel. The fully charged battery lasts 45 minutes after 60 minutes of shaving.

10. Philips Shaver Series 3000

What is the Series 3 at Braun, is the Series 3000 at competitor Philips, where the Philips Shaver Series 3000 S3510/06 is at home. The electric dry shaver is equipped with ComfortCut blades, which move effortlessly over the skin with their rounded edges and therefore irritate it less. It is also equipped with flexible shaving heads that move in four directions to allow it to adapt to the contour of the face. All in all, however, it has a lot less features to offer than the top Philips devices, such as the second-placed Philips S9711/31 Series 9000 from our shaver test.

Other highlights are a solid battery life of 50 minutes with one hour charging time, a precision trimmer and the fact that the shaver can be opened at the touch of a button and then cleaned under running water. In addition, its low price of only around 60 euros speaks for itself.
